Qatar is ready to sell its first green bond soon, the Gulf state’s finance minister told Bloomberg Television at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
“We’re ready to do it very soon,” Qatar’s finance minister, Ali Al-Kuwari. “We are not hungry for money but it will be mainly to send a strong statement” about the need to counter climate change.
The green bonds would be the first external debt issuance in four years. Qatar has last issues Eurobonds in 2020, selling $10 billion of debt and has since didnot issue other bonds.
The Gulf country has finalised a green-finance framework to meet the requirements for issuing green bonds, that fund projects meant to reduce carbon and other planet-warming emissions.
KPMG reported in December 2023, that the Gulf country could both grow its green bond market and find new avenues to attract sustainable funding.
