Plug Power has completed the first fill of a cryogenic tanker with liquid green hydrogen at its new plant in Georgia, US, which will be used by Walmart, Amazon and Home Depot.

Plug Power has completed the first fill of a tanker with liquid green hydrogen at its new plant in Georgia, USA. The plant started liquid hydrogen production in January 2024 using eight 5MW PEM electrolysers. The cryogenic trailer has been filled with enough green hydrogen to fuel 3,216 forklifts which will be taken to Walmart and Amazon sites.

From production to fill, Plug says the whole process was completed in around four days.

The retail giants have been utilising forklifts powered by fuel cells for multiple years. In December (2023) Plug installed a 1MW electrolyser at an Amazon fulfilment centre in Colorado.

“The first delivery of our green hydrogen molecules marks a critical milestone for the green hydrogen economy,” said Andy Marsh, CEO of Plug Power.

Plug’s General Manager, Energy Solutions and Chief Strategy Officer, Sanjay Shrestha, added, “This validates our investment in building out a production plant network – a bet on our customers’ desire for more sustainable solutions.”

The Georgia developments comes after the green hydrogen player announced B. Riley Securities would sell up to $1bn of its common stock as it looked to raise additional capital.

In November 2023 Plug reported a net loss of $283.5m for Q3 2023, seeing its losses for the nine months ended September 30, 2023, reach $726m, compared to $500.5m for the same period in 2022.
